The Impossibility of Knowing
My book is a collection of some of my previously published papers and stresses the ‘not knowing’, humane, professional yet loving stance that I take as a Psychoanalytic Psychotherapist. It integrates and collates many of the above papers. The title arose from a letter I received at the end of a patient's therapy, in which he wrote:"thank you for teaching me that the answer is that there are no answers"

Part I centres on patients with specific types of psychopathology who pose particular difficulties for the analyst in forming a working alliance.
Part II is concerned with relationships where love, hate and the erotic are a focal part of the analytic encounter
Part III defines some particular, and rather extreme, challenges to analytic work – e.g. enactments, the absent patient and general everyday dilemmas.
